There are quite a few theories as to how the name Kirkcaldy
(pronounced 'kercoddy') came about.

According to Chambers Scottish Place Names it means
'castle on the hard hill' (caer - fort, castle / caled - hard / din - hill, fort)

On some gravestones the spelling is 'Kirkcaldie'.
