KIRKCALDY

KIRKCALDY CIVIC SOCIETY

Kirkcaldy is situated on the northern shores of the Firth of Forth in the Kingdom of Fife. The town was initially developed along the coastline before expanding inland and this gave it the alternative name 'The Lang Toun' or long town.

There are quite a few theories as to how the name Kirkcaldy (pronounced 'kercoddy') came about.

According to Chambers Scottish Place Names it means...

'castle on the hard hill' (caer - fort, castle / caled - hard / din - hill, fort)

There are variations on the spelling...

On some gravestones the spelling is 'Kirkcaldie' and 'Kirkaldy'.
