The Linktown Philp school opened in 1828.

A wealthy linen manufacturer called Robert Philp left a large sum of money in his will to educate the children of the poor.

The Education Act (Scotland) was passed in 1872 and the school closed in 1890.

This wonderful building with its life-size statue of Philp sitting on top of the front gable was demolished in 1966.
